Do Companies Have to Use High Fructose Corn Syrup in Foods?

Published by couponqueenofcorning at 5:48 pm under family Edit This

We are in the midst of trying to reduce / eliminate foods that contain high fructose corn syrup (hfcs). Our bodies do not know how to process hfcs and that is why it is bad for us. Has anyone seen the new ads on tv saying that hfcs is the same as sugar. I don’t know how it could be, when they are taking a natural product - corn - and processing it into something else. I find it ironic that since manufacturers have been adding hfcs to our foods in the 1970s that obesity, especially in kids, has increased dramatically.

OK. I’m done ranting. I’ve noticed that hfcs is in so much. From jelly to pancake syrup, to even most cereals. At the store I am constantly looking at ingredients to see whether or not it has hfcs in it. I find it kind of crazy that a product has fruit, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup AND sugar!!!

The kids like graham crackers and we are having trouble finding any without hfcs. We eat pancakes or french toast about once a week, and all the pancake syrups have it in them, unless they have other chemicals in them to make them Lite syrup. I would love to be able to buy real maple syrup, but it has gone up so much in price that we just can’t afford it.

We also drink a lot of chocolate milk. It is the only way I can drink enough milk. We haven’t found any chocolate syrup yet that didn’t have hfcs in it. So I will be making our own, now that we used the last of some Hershey’s I had stockpiled. I have found some recipes online, and I will let you know what works the best.

Has anyone else tried to cut hfcs out of their diets? Let me know your thoughts.

The commercials in favor if high fructose corn syrup aren’t saying that it’s healthy for you per se, but they are saying it’s alright in moderation. The problem is, as you’ve discovered, high fructose corn syrup is in nearly everything. There are definitely ways of getting around it, although they are hard to do if you’re on a tight budget.

I don’t know if there’s one near you but Jason’s Deli (www.jasonsdeli.com) has eliminated high fructose corn syrup in all of the food they serve. The food is excellent and well priced. It’s my favorite place to treat myself with if I have some extra cash and don’t feel like making lunch.

Instead of putting syrup on your pancakes, maybe you can try using fruit and whipped cream instead? Canned fruit in lite syrup isn’t all that expensive and the brand that I have doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup in it. Pouring a can of fruit over pancakes and topping it with some freshly made Dream Whip or whipped cream sounds like a wonderful breakfast to me!
