First Time Shopping for a Whole Month!

Published by couponqueenofcorning at 8:01 am under FrugalLiving Edit This

So, I have a new experiment for the month of December. I have decided to do my shopping once for the whole month. We will, of course, need to stop by a store once a week but only to buy milk, yogurt and fresh fruit. We had decided to try this because last week when we went grocery shopping it was freezing! I hate bringing the kids out in such cold weather, plus I just personally hate to go out in the cold.

Last night we decided to go out and do our month’s worth of grocery shopping. Before we went shopping I planned meals for the month and made a shopping list. I came up with $150 for the budget for this shopping trip and $15 a week for the next 3 weeks for milk, fruit and yogurt. I told my husband before we even left for the store that it was going to be about $150 total and to not go into shock when he paid. LOL. We normally spend $50 a week on food so doing it this way may not save us much on groceries, but we will save on time and on gas.

We first went to a local grocery store. There, we bought 11 pounds of ground beef for $2.59 a pound and 6 pounds of boneless chicken fingers for $1.68 a pound. We also used our WIC check for $5 of fruits or veggies and got 5 bags of Birds Eye veggies. Total was a little over $30 but not a bad price considering it was all meat. I will be cooking up most of it and freezing it.

Then it was off to Aldi’s to spend the bulk of our budget. We bought 6 boxes of oatmeal packets, 4 boxes of graham crackers, 4 gallons of milk, cheese, canned fruit, eggs, raisins, bread, along with other stuff I can’t recall off the top of my head. We ended up paying a little over $80.

We then went to Wally World to pick up the few things we couldn’t get at Aldi’s. We bought more canned fruit (Aldi’s didn’t have many canned fruits without high fructose corn syrup), hot dogs, rotini (had a $1 coupon), 2 packages of dried beef (hubby wants chipped beef on toast), candy canes, and some chocolates for my aunt and her husband for Christmas presents. Total was less than $24.

So, we should be set for for the month. My husband can grab our weekly needs on his way home from work on Saturday mornings. I’m just hoping that we didn’t forget something. If we did, I guess we will learn from it and make next month’s list even better.

How often do you shop? Weekly? Monthly? Please share by leaving me a comment.

Ahhhh! I couldn’t possibly only go once, especially in December. People are constantly coming and going and it’s a mad house! Good luck on this crazy experiment! :)
