Nothing Like an Asthma Attack While You’re Wrapping Gifts!

So, my husband started wrapping a few gifts Tuesday night while I was working on some stuff for my classes. After taking my online quiz for my class, I started bringing up gifts from the basement. Now mind you, these have been down there less than a month and some only for a few days. As we’re wrapping, we’re both getting headaches and having trouble breathing. I don’t have asthma or allergies like my husband but I was having a lot of problems too. We had to open windows in our living room just to air it out. Now, keep in mind that we’re in the Northeast, so it was like 20 degrees out. BBbbbrrr!!!

We brought up the Christmas tree last week from the basement and it was so bad that my husband was having trouble with  his breathing. The tree was in a box that was sealed, so the offending odor/allergen must have seaped through the box. My 10 year old and I ended up putting up the tree and decorating it. Oh and the 2 year old hindered helped also. We thought we were going to have to buy a new one, but after it aired out for a day or two it was better.

So, now back to the whole wrapping presents ordeal. After a night of not being able to breathe well and just feeling crappy in the morning, I did some research and I think it is some type of mold spore. Because we  rent a half house, I cannot do a lot to prevent mold in the basement. We will be moving in spring so I’m not too worried about it anyways.  So I will have to wear one of those masks and go through and throw away anything that’s not in a bin or can be wiped down. But that will have to wait a month or so. After doing some research online yesterday we decided that we should look into getting an air purifier.

So, we went to Sears, Lowes and then ended up at Target, which is where we ended up buying one. Target actually had a wide variety of air purifiers, so if you ever decide to buy one, check at Target first. There were several different brands and it took some time to look at the boxes and read what each one did. We finally decided on buying a Honeywell that cost us a little over $150. It was quite a bit of money, but we figured it would be worth it if we could breathe better. We got it home and plugged it in, and within no time the air was much better. $150 later we can actually breathe the air!! And the thing is actually very quiet, like a fan on a low setting. We have it near our bed and we barely hear it. At least we had some extra in savings from hubby’s year-end bonus so we didn’t have to put it on a credit card.
