Outcome of Our Once a Month Shopping Trip

Well we ventured out about noon today to do our shopping for the month, list in hand. We had planned on going to Sam’s, Walmart, and to Aldi’s (where we would get a majority of our groceries). We ended up not going to WalMart. It was packed and I’m sure most of the shoppers were in the food department considering it is Friday. At least we didn’t go out of our way to find this out, because Walmart is between Sam’s and Aldi’s. So, no gas wasted there.

So, our first stop was Sam’s Club. It was pretty busy, but we ended up in line at the right time and didn’t end up waiting too long. Here’s what we bought there:

  • 2 large bags of coffee.                               11.22 each
  • 15 pack of yogurt                                        7.38
  • 8 cans of pineapple                                     7.87
  • 8 cans of mandarin oranges                       7.44
  • 5 pounds of ground turkey                         9.85

Our total from Sam’s was $54.98. I am hoping that hubby will not go through that much coffee this much, but I wanted to be prepared because last month we ran out. We always buy some canned fruit and I buy when I can get them for $1 a can or less. I would have loved to have gotten fresh fruit, but we still have apples and everything right now is very pricey.

The next stop was Aldi’s. I have to say that this has quickly become my favorite store. We use to shop a lot of the local grocery stores, but that was when sales were better and there were more coupons for foods we eat. I really use to live up to my name of Coupon Queen, but lately, the coupons just haven’t been there.

So, at Aldi’s we got quite a bit of food:

  • 3 packs of hot dog rolls                              .85 each
  • 3 packs of hamburg rolls                            .85 each

  • 3 bags of frozen peas                                 .79 each

  • deli ham                                                      2.49
  • taco seasoning                                             .33
  • 4 boxes mac n cheese                                  .33 each
  • 2 pck of sponges with scrubby                     .99
  • 2 bags of peanuts                                       1.49 each
  • 2 75′ aluminum foil                                      2.09 each
  • chicken nuggets (trying for 1st time)          3.99
  • 3 gallons of skim milk                                  2.39 a gallon

  • 5 boxes of instant oatmeal packs               1.49 each
  • kitchen garbage bags                                 2.49
  • rice                                                              1.35
  • 2 boxes of snack crackers                           1.69 each
  • 2 boxes of graham crackers                        1.29 each
  • box of animal crackers                                1.29
  • jar of mild salsa                                          1.49
  • 2 boxes of instant pudding                          .39 each
  • italian bread crumbs                                    .89

So, grand total for Aldi’s was $96.41. This brings our total so far to $151.39. We still have $98.61 left for the month. I use about $50 of that for the weekly foods we need like milk, fresh fruit, etc. So we will have a little less than $50 to go get the couple things that I need to get at Walmart. But we’re not going until Monday when it’s less busy.

All in all, I think we did rather good. What we bought today, along with what we already have will last us the whole month (and possibly longer). We would love to buy really healthy foods since both hubby and I are trying to lose weight, but right now we can’t afford that kind of grocery bill. I am going to be concentrating on less pasta and more rice in our meals. We’ve been doing pretty good with having a veggie with dinner, but I’d also like to make sure we are all eating enough fruit. Maybe next month we will have a little extra and can afford to get some more lean proteins and more fresh fruit. We shall see.
