Being Prepared for Bad Weather
Well we are set to have up to a foot of snow this evening and you know what that means. Everyone and their brother will be out getting food and other things before the weather gets bad. People freak out and think they need to stock up for the next day or two. I guess that is what’s good about always having a stockpile. We buy enough milk for the whole milk (basically we just fill the one shelf full of milk), that’s about 5 gallons of milk a week. That would really be the only thing we would need to run out and buy if we were getting low. From doing the bulk of our shopping once a month, we have more than enough food to last us through any snow storm.
We also have a kerosene heater in our basement and some kerosene (though we haven’t used in in a few years, but it is there in case of emergency - kerosene started getting way too expensive. Just a back up in case the electric goes out. A few months ago the power went out around midnight, and luckily I was using that when they did. I ended up using my laptop to be able to see to go get candles. We have a box in the basement with camping supplies, that includes a propane stove, regular can opener, first aid kit and more. In case of an extended power outage we would have that stuff to use.
So, for a short term power outage we would be ok, but if it lasted more than a couple days we would run out of kerosene. Once we move into our new home this spring, we will be better off because we are planning on having a wood stove for secondary heat.
How are you prepared for extended power outages?
