My Husband got Laid Off

I’m sorry I haven’t written in a week. I had content for several days already done, but couldn’t bring myself to do much online. There’s been just too much going on.

Dh came home early from work last Friday night with the news that him and 34 other guys had been laid off. They are let them finish the weekend so that they will have that pay plus their unused vacation added onto it. Thank goodness I had already done a unemployment budget!!! If I hadn’t we would have both been panicked! We will be fine because I am so frugal. We have almost $800 in savings and will be finishing our income tax Monday through Turbotax and should have a refund of about $5000 within 2 weeks. So that will help.

We are cutting back the cable to channels 2-13 (this is about $10, costs about $40 for them to come disconnect it, but will save us about $40 a month), canceling our cell phones (we will get Trac phones for $35 less a month - we don’t have a home phone so this is a necessity). We will be keeping our internet through cable company for now because I need it for my classes. When my classes get done, if dh is not back to work, I will look for full-time work (and he can stay at home being super dad). I have 4 classes left in order to get my associates in computer information technologies and in all likelihood will not be able to return for a while to finish it… sucks.

The worst part of this whole thing is that we were in the final stages of having a modular put on some land we were given. We are going through Rural Development for the loan and it just has taken forever. We started the application process last May and we were getting ready to have a pre-construction meeting this week and a closing by the end of the month. We contacted them and now we have to go through the entire process again from the beginning. That really sucks!!!

If we had just closed on it before now we would have been fine - payments don’t start until the house is finished. And even on unemployment we would have been able to get by with the mortgage (743 a month including taxes and insurance). It just sucks.  I was really looking forward to being in our own home this summer. This 2 1/2 bedroom apartment is just way  too cramped for the 5 of us! So, I guess I am  a little depressed over that. We had also planned to take the $8000 credit for first time home buyers and use some of that (about $12500 refund) to pay off our credit cards (about $6000). This whole thing just really sucks.

I will update again and let you all know how things are going.
